Postpartum &
Newborn Care
We recognize that pregnancy and postpartum experiences occur regardless of pregnancy outcome.
The postpartum period — sometimes called the fourth trimester — is a time of significant physical, emotional, and hormonal transition following the end of a pregnancy. Our care is designed to support healing in all its forms.
For Parents with a Live Infant
For families welcoming a newborn, we continue caring for both parent and baby for six weeks postpartum.
We want you to feel guided and cared for during this transition into parenthood. A member of our team will conduct one or two in-home postpartum visits, depending on your place of delivery, along with a follow-up phone call at two weeks. Office visits are typically scheduled at one week and six weeks postpartum, with additional visits arranged as needed.
During these visits, we assess overall well-being, including:
Physical recovery and healing
Emotional and mental health
Family and community support systems
Physical assessment includes vital signs, bleeding, uterine involution, nutrition, activity level, and infant feeding support. We also provide guidance as families adjust to life with a new baby.
At the six-week visit, we review recovery, discuss family planning options, and provide gynecologic care, including Pap smears if desired.
If challenges with breastfeeding or chestfeeding arise, referrals to trusted lactation professionals, including International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), are available.
For Those Navigating Pregnancy Loss
Postpartum care is just as important for those whose pregnancies end in miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, or other forms of loss.
Care during this time focuses on both physical recovery and emotional support. Visits may include:
Monitoring bleeding and uterine recovery
Lactation support or suppression guidance
Hormonal and physical recovery assessment
Emotional well-being check-ins
Referrals for counseling or bereavement support if desired
We recognize that loss experiences are deeply personal. Our role is to provide respectful, compassionate care while allowing space for grief, healing, and individual coping needs.
Additional visits are available based on clinical needs or personal preference.
Newborn Care
For families with infants, newborn care is integrated into postpartum services.
We assess each baby’s well-being through:
Vital signs
Weight checks
Feeding patterns
Diaper output
The 24-hour postpartum visit includes standard newborn screenings such as:
Metabolic (newborn) screening
Hearing screening
Non-invasive cardiac screening
These screenings follow national standards of care for newborn health.
Footprints may be completed at the birth or during the home visit, depending on timing and family preference.
